O EPS<\/strong>, como material isolante, tem as suas origens nos laborat\u00f3rios da BASF, no ano de 1952.
Desde ent\u00e3o o seu desenvolvimento n\u00e3o tem cessado sendo hoje aplicado em todo o mundo, principalmente na \u00e1rea da constru\u00e7\u00e3o civil, na ind\u00fastria de embalagens e tamb\u00e9m com uma quota razo\u00e1vel na \u00e1rea de decora\u00e7\u00e3o.
Hoje em dia o consumo mundial de EPS<\/strong> \u00e9 de aproximadamente 1.200.000 toneladas, prevendo-se que 40% deste volume seja consumido na Europa.<\/p>\nO EPS em Portugal<\/strong><\/p>\n
O EPS<\/strong> \u00e9 aplicado principalmente na constru\u00e7\u00e3o civil em placas e como acondicionador na ind\u00fastria da embalagem, tanto em placas como em corpos moldados.
Em Portugal surge no final da d\u00e9cada de 50, obtendo r\u00e1pida aceita\u00e7\u00e3o em qualquer desses sectores.
O mercado portugu\u00eas consume cerca de 1 % do consumo europeu, 60% do qual na constru\u00e7\u00e3o civil.
O consumo per capita ainda est\u00e1 muito aqu\u00e9m dos restantes pa\u00edses europeus.<\/p>\nO Processo de Fabrico do EPS<\/strong><\/p>\n
O EPS<\/strong> \u00e9 produzido a partir do petr\u00f3leo.
O processo de fabrico do EPS<\/strong> expans\u00edvel \u00e9 efetuado em larga escala industrial e resume-se \u00e0 polimeriza\u00e7\u00e3o do estireno ao qual \u00e9 adicionado um agente expansor.

A capacidade mais importante do EPS<\/strong>, \u00e9 a resist\u00eancia \u00e0 passagem de temperatura, o que se deve \u00e0 sua estrutura celular, constitu\u00edda por muitos milh\u00f5es de c\u00e9lulas fechadas com di\u00e2metros de alguns d\u00e9cimos de mil\u00edmetros.
